About the artist
Illustrator/founder of Otto and Oliv, Rae Joan has previously worked as a teacher, photographer and designer.
She's a proud life-long natural history geek whose design inspirations include Japanese kawaii, 1950's tinplate and penny toys & Sylvanian Families, with a smattering of Scandinanvian influence from her partners native Norway.
Anatomical authenticity is important to her, so she each design starts by working from real-life observations when possible, and fossils when not.
Rae likes to include creature name origins (which are often Latin or Greek) to encourage the all imporant 'why?' question.
She breaks down long names of creatures such as dinosaurs into syllables, to help support small people who are learning to read.
